Context
Côte d’Ivoire’s NDC intends to reduce its GHG emissions by 28% by 2030. The Government of Côte d’Ivoire has committed nationally and internationally on mitigation and adaptation actions but public and private sector funding to implement the plans and committed actions have been deficient.
Côte d’Ivoire has shown strong economic growth and maintains a positive outlook with a projected GDP growth rate of between 7% and 7.5%. Agriculture takes up most of the proportion of the country’s economic growth. Cocoa, coffee, and cashews provides employment to about half of the employed population resulting in cocoa beans and products contributing 30% to the country’s exports. Therefore, the adverse effects of climate change pose a great threat to the economy and the livelihoods of many citizens. For instance, the rising temperature and changing rainfall patterns will be destructive to the agriculture of cocoa beans.
Better land and the development of green infrastructure are essential to reduce the vulnerability of the populations living in flood-prone areas like the city of Abidjan. The Government of Côte d’Ivoire has initiated and implemented programmes to access climate finance and mobilize investments in climate projects, including capacity development to engage effectively over the long-term. For example, the implementation of zero-deforestation agroforestry models in three southern regions of Cote d’Ivoire to reduce GHG emissions by decoupling deforestation from cocoa production.
