Consultation Workshop for The Development of Green City Guidelines for the Autonomous District of Abidjan

June 2023 – A consultation workshop was held for the development of green city guidelines for the autonomous district of Abidjan in the Felix Houphouët-Boigny room of the Hotel of the Autonomous District of Abidjan on June 6. The workshop was organized under GCF Readiness Program “Support for the Establishment of a National Green Building and Infrastructure Financing Vehicle, Development of Green Building Minimum Compliance System, and DAE Application in Cote d’Ivoire”.

A sub-component of this program aims to develop, in a participatory and ownership approach, green city guidelines for the Autonomous District of Abidjan. The main objective of this workshop was to consult stakeholders for the development of the document.

The secondary objectives of this workshop were to:

  • Inform participants about the different key concepts related to green cities as well as about the tools for collecting information for the development of guidelines;
  • Define the vision, objectives, and guidelines for the greening of the District of Abidjan;
  • Identify the challenges of greening the District of Abidjan;
  • Identify next steps.

Dr Alain Serges Kouadio, GGGI’s Senior program officer, delivered a welcome’s speech to the participants, following Mr Kopieu, Representant of the Governor Minister of the Autonomous District of Abidjan.  Opening remarks was done by Lt-Col. Yao Marcel NDA from the representative of the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development.

Subsequently, after the group photo, Dr Aman, GGGI expert, made two presentations on the readiness project and the green city guidelines. After the two presentations, the participants were divided into working groups according to the following sectors: waste, energy, agriculture and forestry, land use, land cover, transport, energy, gender, financing, and governance. The different groups were able to identify problems and solutions to green their respective sectors.

The closing remarks of the training workshop were delivered by Dr. Nicaise Aman, Senior Program Associate, GGGI Abidjan, who thanked the participants for their presence and active participation during this consultation and indicated the next steps of the process.
