GGGI IN THE KYRGYZ REPUBLIC

In 2020, the Kyrgyz Republic joined the GGGI as its 37th member. Following the signing of the Host Country Agreement with the Kyrgyz Government, the country office was officially registered and opened in 2024. GGGI supports the key climate priorities of the Kyrgyz Republic, which include the National Development Strategy (2018–2040). the National Development Program (2025–2030), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

GGGI supports green growth in the Kyrgyz Republic by providing technical assistance, conducting policy assessments, helping attract green investments, and facilitating knowledge sharing. This work is carried out in close cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, as well as partners in both the public and private sectors. With a strong focus on protecting the livelihoods of vulnerable communities, GGGI in the Kyrgyz Republic seeks to strengthen local climate resilience, expand access to green finance, build institutional capacity, and promote sustainable public–private partnerships.

“We can confidently call this a Kyrgyz Impact — a powerful initiative with the potential to drive meaningful change in water management not only across the region, but globally.”
— Sang-Hyup Kim, GGGI Executive Director, at the MoU meeting with the Ministry of Emergency Situations on the flood and drought management project, July 2025

OUR COLLECTIVE JOURNEY

Since opening in late 2024, GGGI has begun promoting green growth in the Kyrgyz Republic, laying the groundwork for future cooperation through Memoranda of Understanding with the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision, and the Ministry of Emergency Situations. In coordination with national partners, GGGI presented its Country Planning Framework (CPF) 2026–2030, outlining its strategic engagement and commitment to advancing climate adaptation in the Kyrgyz Republic.

Under the “Strengthening Climate Resilience through Introduction of Innovative Smart Techniques in Flood and Drought Management in Central Asia” project, GGGI developed the Climate Resilience Green Growth (CRGG) report to strengthen community preparedness for climate-related disasters.

In collaboration with national counterparts, the GGGI team conducted a regional assessment featuring a policy review and gap analysis, identifying opportunities to enhance coherence across climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and water resource management. The findings informed Stakeholder Engagement Plans and Gender Action Plans, ensuring a country-driven, participatory, and inclusive approach.

The project also delivered a Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA) to deepen understanding of climate and disaster risks in target areas. This included development of flood propagation and impact-based forecasting models to improve early warning systems, as well as risk, vulnerability, and market-based assessments to understand how climate risks affect communities, livelihoods, and local economies.
