Greening the future through sustainable buildings and infrastructure

Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, November 24, 2023 – under the Green Climate Fund Readiness Programme, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Sustainable Development and Ecological Transition, held a consultation workshop as part of its initiatives, focusing on the implementation of a national financing vehicle for green buildings and infrastructures (NGBIFV). This initiative is aligned with Cote d’Ivoire’s transition model for green growth, integrated into both the National Development Plan and the Nationally Determined Contributions.

“I would like to express gratitude to all the stakeholders present today, emphasizing the importance for Côte d’Ivoire to undertake more initiatives to address the urgent issue of climate change. I am hopeful that this workshop will yield conclusive outcomes in the elaboration of the concept note,” Dr. Kouadio Serges Alain, Senior Program Officer at GGGI Cote d’Ivoire stated.

The primary objective of this workshop was to develop a concept note and a project preparation facility to establish, operationalize, and capitalize on the NGBIFV in Côte d’Ivoire, with the National Investment Bank (BNI) as an execution entity. To operationalize the NGBIFV, a funding request was submitted to the Green Climate Fund, with the Ivorian National Bank of Investment serving as the project executing entity and host of the financial vehicle.

“This overture has enabled the BNI to join several other green and inclusive initiatives, the focus of which remains strengthening the resilience of the various players and institutions to combat the effects of climate change” Mr. Sanogo Mamadou, Counselor of the Director General at BNI said.

The subsequent workshop session commenced with two presentations that engaged various stakeholders in the Ivorian real estate sector. These presentations outlined the components of the NGBIFV and the specific features of the project, soliciting suggestions and recommendations for each component. Groups sessions were organized during which participants worked on the theory of change and defined alignment between the project and GCF investment criteria.

Notable recommendations emerged from the workshop, including the importance of considering the National Population Policy, given its significant market influence in Côte d’Ivoire. Additionally, participants urged an evaluation of the possibility of directing communities to construct green buildings, such as green schools, aligning with sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.
