GGGI and CGECI Join Forces to Advance green growth in Cote d’Ivoire

Abidjan, 24 April 2024 –The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the General Confederation of Enterprises of Côte d’Ivoire (CGECI) have today signed a Memorandum of understanding to harness their mutual efforts and resources to address pressing environmental challenges and promote green growth opportunities in Côte d’Ivoire. This partnership underscores the shared commitment to drive sustainable development initiatives in the country with the private sector.

Côte d’Ivoire has begun to increase its mitigation goals, to strengthen its adaptation resilience and to accelerate forest, land and energy reforms to contribute effectively to the fight against poverty. Indeed, the revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of Côte d’Ivoire revealed a huge financing need of 22 billion dollars, broken down as follows: 10 billion dollars for the mitigation component and 12 billion dollars for the adaptation component.

Under the MoU, GGGI will work with CGECI to accelerate the use of clean energy, adoption of circular economy and proper waste management practices, promotion of energy efficiency as well as development of a greenpreneur program that will focus on energy, agriculture, and forestry, among others. In addition, both organizations will also partner on facilitating access to climate finance and improving evidence-based knowledge sharing and capacity building programs on green growth, sustainable development, and carbon markets.

“I am really delighted with the consolidation of this partnership for strengthened collaboration with the private sector on green growth perspectives. The CGECI represents 80% of the private sector of Côte d’Ivoire” Ms. Olola Vieyra, Country Representative GGGI said. “It is therefore important that GGGI seek mechanisms to facilitate access to green climate finance but also encourage investments in clean energy solutions, resilient infrastructure and green industries in addition to the creation of green jobs,” she added.

Mr. Stéphane ANGHUI, Executive Director of CGECI, expressed his delight at GGGI’s support for numerous initiatives of CGECI: “Our organization has always benefited from GGGI’s support, first through the Forum on Energy Efficiency and then through the Cap Green Forum. Today, we are entering a third stage, on the occasion of the visit of Assistant Director-General, and Head of Investment and Policy Solutions Division Dr. Kyung Nam Shin, to materialize the collaborative platform that we aim to establish with the government, businesses, and Technical and Financial Partners on ecological and climate issues.”

This partnership represents a significant step forward in the collective efforts to achieve sustainable development goals and address the challenges brought by climate change in Cote d’Ivoire. GGGI and CGECI are committed to working closely together to harness the transformative power of green growth and build a more resilient and sustainable future for all.

Commenting on the signing of the MoU, Dr. Kyung NAM, Assistant Director General & Head of Investment & Policy Solutions Division (IPSD) of GGGI, expressed optimism about the prospects of collaboration, stating, ” We are committed to promoting climate finance and increasing green private investment flows, translating green growth strategies and investment plans into actionable projects that will benefit communities and the environment alike”.
