Project Overview
The Solar grandmother project, will put a positive light on the rural status of older women as it aims at recruiting and training elderly rural women in the installation, operations and management of the solar systems. The approach to train semi-literate and illiterate women many of them grandmothers to become solar engineers has proven successful in many developing and least developed countries. These women after training, returned home to install solar panels and batteries, maintain and repair them, changing lives in their villages forever. Moreover, they have trained others in neighboring villages to do the same.
It will also contribute to raising awareness of the need to combat climate change and protect the environment, reduce urban and rural inequalities and improve the living conditions of beneficiary households, reduce gender inequalities in rural areas through the involvement of women as key actors and beneficiaries of the project implementation, and accelerate local development through increased income generating actives in villages of Burkina Faso.

Objective
Empowering elderly women to contribute to the reduction of the negative environmental impacts from the use of fossil fuels in Burkina Faso through the promotion of clean technologies and low-carbon energy source.
Outcome
R1: local expertise in solar technology available in the rural areas.
R2: increased availability and accessibility of solar electrification in rural areas.

Impact
The project will impact 30 villages, with an estimated total population of about 30,000 people. Of this number, the direct beneficiaries are estimated to be 30 trained grandmothers, 30 trained women assistants, 100 people accessing to solar energy.
