Training on “The Green Growth Action Plan Development and Green Growth Integration for the Southern Region”

Can Tho, June 8-9, 2023 – On June 8-9, 2023, GGGI Viet Nam supported the Department of Science, Education, Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) in organization of a training on “The Green Growth Action Plan Development and Green Growth Integration for the Southern Region” in Can Tho City in collaboration with GIZ Viet Nam.

The training course is part of a series of capacity building activities on green growth for the North, Central and South regions to support provinces and cities to implement the National Green Growth Strategy for the period 2021 – 2030, vision to 2050 and the National Green Growth Action Plan for the period 2021 – 2030 towards the national goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Speaking at the training conference, Dr. Lee Jaeseung, GGGI Vietnam Country Representative, emphasized that the Green Growth Action Plan is a prerequisite for Vietnam to seize opportunities in addressing climate challenges. In particular, the transition to a low-carbon economy will bring great potential for green technology, renewable energy and sustainable industry. Integrating these factors into provincial green growth action plans will support creating favorable conditions for attracting investment, accelerating economic growth and creating sustainable green jobs locally.

Participants of the training were leaders of units that play a key role in leading and implementing provincial green growth such as People’s Committee, Department of Planning and Investment, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of Industry and Trade, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Department of Construction and Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Southeast provinces and the Mekong Delta.

Developed to help provinces determine the scope and content of green growth deployment, the training clarified the approach, necessary skills, and methods for scoping of the National Green Growth Action Plan and Strategy in provinces. This aims to enhance the local capability to mobilize stakeholders, including social resources for green growth implementation as well as identifying investment projects.

At the training, participants engaged in group discussions to review the socio-economic and environmental status of provinces and identify the overall green growth orientation, and enhancement in specific sectors of Energy, Agriculture, and Tourism.

Vietnam identifies green growth as an important solution to promote economic restructuring in association with renovating the growth model, improving competitiveness and resilience to external shocks and directly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions towards a carbon neutral economy. Provinces have an important role in implementing action strategies to achieve national green growth goals. The training course is an opportunity for localities to enhance sharing of experiences and exchange of good practices in order to promote local strengths in implementing potential solutions, thereby promoting the role of provinces in implementing green growth.
