GGGI Releases Report with Recommendations for NDC Revision Process

Seoul, Republic of Korea, –15 June 2023 – Current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) place the world on a trajectory towards a disastrous 2.7°C warming. To avert this scenario, the focus must now shift towards the implementation of NDCs notes GGGI in a recent technical report. In contribution to the Global Stocktake under Article 14, which reviews collective progress on NDC implementation, the report titled Closer to 1.5°C: Driving Ambitions to Deliver on the Paris Agreement shares lessons and recommendations for the upcoming NDC revision process in 2025.

The report integrates valuable insights gained during the 2020-2021 NDC revision process. “Based on experience of supporting 30 Member States and Partner countries in enhancing their NDCs, the report provides insights on how to turn NDCs into effective instruments for climate action,” Ingvild Solvang, GGGI’s Head, Deputy Director of Climate Action and Inclusive Development Unit, noted. “Also, the report analyzes NDCs from the perspective of mitigation and adaptation as well as gender equality, social inclusion considerations, financial planning, and international cooperation under Article 6 readiness,” Ms. Solvang added.

The report highlights barriers to NDC implementation facing developing countries, particularly those linked to access to climate finance. It also brings to attention key priorities for GGGI’s support to climate action. “As the world prepares for COP28, it is vital that nations collectively commit to accelerating their climate ambitions.,” Siddhartha Nauduri, GGGI’s Global Lead, Climate Change Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems said. “This report provides a clear roadmap for governments and stakeholders to intensify their efforts in reducing emissions, adapting to the climate crisis, and ensuring a sustainable future for all,” Mr Siddhartha added. Along with its 2030 strategy, GGGI will focus on strengthening and supporting NDC planning, modeling, and implementation and capacity development of Members.
