GGGI supported the State of Nuevo León (Mexico) to deploy a new electric bus fleet, benefitting 46k passengers daily

Nuevo Leon, Mexico, June 8, 2023. Everyday millions of Mexicans use public transportation. Because of that, electromobility can become a low-carbon and efficient solution. To make that happen, GGGI is providing technical assistance to some Subnational Governments in the Country. Last week, the State of Nuevo León’s Public Transport Authority (“Metrorrey”) awarded contracts to firms that will electrify two bus feeder routes in Monterrey by the end of 2023, benefiting 46,000 passengers daily by offering an enhanced, low-carbon, and sustainable public transport alternative. Throughout the public tender, the technical assistance of GGGI was crucial, mainly in the enhancement of the public tender documents, the support during the process, a thorough assessment of the offers, and recommendations to enhance Metrorrey’s existing financial model.

The awarded contractors will be deploying 66 new e-buses (out of a projected total of 110) by the end of 2023, and will mobile USD 33M for capital investments focused on electric buses (e-buses) and charging infrastructure. The environmental impact (considered for the project’s life cycle of 15 years) consists in avoiding the emission of 24,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) plus 4,000 tons of black carbon.

In parallel, GGGI developed a Carbon Market Roadmap to monetize opportunities in the e-mobility sector which will help future green investments.

This intervention is a key part of the GGGI Mexico Subnational program, which aims to decarbonize the public transport sector, offering low-carbon and green opportunities for states and local governments. A clear example of this was the successful deployment of 60 e-buses in Mexico City last year, managing to convert an entire Metrobús transfer line, as the first in the country to be fully electric.

Summarizing the efforts in e-mobility in Mexico, GGGI has been helping to guarantee the deployment of 170 e-buses in 2 of the largest cities of the country, Monterrey, and Mexico City, helping more than 230,000 daily passengers to transfer more sustainably and friendly with the environment.
