GGGI Jordan and Ministry of Environment Host a Side Event on Refugee Women, Climate Action, and Green Economy at COP28

Dubai, December 9, 2023 – During COP28 in Dubai, the Ministry of Environment and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Jordan hosted a side event entitled “Refugee Women, Climate Action and Green Economy” at the UNFCCC’s Capacity Building Hub as part of the Capacities for Rights-based Climate Action Day.

The session was jointly organized by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and SEEK Feminist Network to share insight from the field on how refugees, women, host communities, and vulnerable people can benefit from the green economy to secure sustainable jobs and contribute to addressing climate change. It was also an opportunity to learn from refugee-hosting country governments on capacity-building needs and challenges towards accelerating the creation of green job opportunities, as well as to share success stories at the nexus of climate change, green economy, and refugees.

In the side event, GGGI Jordan Country Representative, Mr. Christophe Assicot, introduced a GGGI ongoing project in Jordan named “Creating Sustainable Green Jobs for Refugees and Host Communities through the Green Economy in Jordan” which supports women, refugees, and host communities to access sustainable jobs opportunities. This project is funded by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and is in line with Jordan’s Climate Refugee Nexus Initiative, which was launched last year at COP27 by His Majesty King Abdullah II.

The side event also proposed a panel discussion where Dr Jihad Al Sawair, the director of the green economy unit at the Ministry of Environment in Jordan, underscored the green economy’s potential to provide refugee women with sustainable green jobs to address climate change. Al Sawair listed several sectors such as water management, waste, agriculture, tourism, transport, and energy which are expected to provide opportunities for refugee women in the near future. Ms. Sara Alhaleeq, the head of climate change adaptation at the Ministry of Environment, presented that refugee women, especially in the water sector, could fill green jobs contributing to climate change adaptation. She also highlighted that refugee women’s capacity is not limited to the water sector; they can also contribute to all other sectors by capacity-building.
