GGGI & Government of Kiribati Celebrates graduates of Home Garden & Agribusiness program

South Tarawa, Kiribati April 24, 2024 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Lands & Agricultural Development (MELAD) and Livestock Division (ALD), along with the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce, Industries & Corporation (MTCIC), proudly announces the successful completion of the Home Garden Program and Agribusiness Training & Mentoring Program under the Climate Smart Agriculture for Kiribati (KCSA) project, funded by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD).

Along with environmental challenges, Kiribati contends with significant issues related to food security. Food is mostly imported and expensive. Agriculture is difficult to sustain, magnified by poor soil quality, which restricts local fresh food production, particularly green vegetables, and diminishes nutritional options. The home garden and agribusiness program aim to support local communities and promote sustainable agricultural practices in Kiribati. Fifty-six (56) women and youth have successfully graduated from the Home Garden Program, providing them with skills and knowledge to enhance food security and promote self-reliance.

Furthermore, eleven (11) aspiring agripreneurs have completed the Agribusiness Training & Mentoring Program, receiving specialized coaching and support to develop their agricultural businesses. Three outstanding agripreneurs have been awarded USD 5,000 each in seed funding to kick-start their agri businesses, while eight others have received USD 7,500 each to further invest in and expand their green sustainable ventures.

During his speech at the graduation ceremony, the Honorable Minister for MELAD emphasized the significance of the moment, stating, ” Let us draw inspiration from the achievements of today’s graduates. Together, we can overcome the challenges that lie ahead and create a more prosperous, sustainable, and resilient agricultural sector for generations to come.”

This graduation marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen Kiribati’s agricultural sector and foster sustainable development, particularly by empowering women and youth to drive positive change in their communities.

The event was attended by the Mr. Ruateki Tekaiara Honorable Minister for MELAD, Mr. Norbert Maass, GGGI Country Representative for Fiji, Kiribati, Vanuatu & Tonga, the Secretary for MELAD; senior government officials, the mayor for Teinainano Urban Council (TUC) and the High Commissioners for Australia and New Zealand.

“We are excited to witness the achievements of these graduates and the tangible impact of this initiative for climate-smart agriculture. It underscores GGGI’s commitment to advancing inclusive and sustainable development in Kiribati,” Mr. Norbert Maass GGGI’s Country Representative for Kiribati said.
