1st Steering Committee Meeting held for the Project on Creating Sustainable Green Jobs for Refugees and Host Communities through Green Economy in Jordan

Amman, Jordan, October 16, 2023 – The Ministry of Environment of Joran, and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Jordan held the first Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting at the Ministry of Environment, Jordan. The steering committee monitors the progress and provides high-level direction and oversight toward the successful completion of the ‘Creating Sustainable Green Jobs for Refugees and Host Communities through Green Economy in Jordan’ project, which is funded by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) with GGGI co-funding. The steering committee brought together key entities relevant to green jobs creation in Jordan, from the Ministry of Environment (MOENV), Ministry of Labour (MOL), Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship (MODEE), Ministry of Social Development (MOSD), Ministry of Interior (MOI), Technical and Vocational Skills Development Commission (TVSDC), as well as the KOICA Jordan Office.

This meeting started with the opening remarks by Eng. Hatem Abu Rumman, deputy director of the green economy unit of the Ministry of Environment. He welcomed all participants to the meeting and underscored that one of the main objectives of the project is to strengthen the Jordanian economy and to create green jobs, which is in alignment with the National Green Growth Plan for Jordan. Mr. Christophe Assicot, the country representative of GGGI Jordan country office, added that the project’s benefits will go beyond environmental impacts and bring positive changes to the employability of host communities and refugees, and that effective collaboration between ministries – MOENV, MOL, MODEE, MOSD, MOI, and TVSDC will be instrumental.

During the meeting, the project’s implementation progress, key achievements, and future plans were presented, and how stakeholders could better cooperate together for this shared initiative was discussed. GGGI highlighted the ongoing Green Employment Analysis, which will provide evidence for the Green Employment Action Plan 2026-2030 and Green Skills Frameworks sectoral technical reports, and the development of the Green Business Online Platform. This year, a capacity building workshop will be held on Green Economy and Green Employment by the project’s core implementation partner, the Good Neighbors Jordan Office.

The Green Jobs Project is implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Good Neighbors International, and Human Asia. The project aims to establish an inclusive green employment ecosystem in Jordan, an evidence-based green employment action plan for 2026-2030, enhanced job seekers’ employability through green skills development and awareness, and green business incubator and accelerator on/offline programs (more information of the green jobs project)
