MANILA – February 23, 2016 – The Global Green Growth Institute, in partnership with the Philippines’ Climate Change Commission (CCC) and the Provincial Government of Palawan, launched the Climate Resilient Green Growth (CRGG) Planning Project, which aims to enhance climate resilience and promote green growth on the island province.
The project was initiated through a two-day Inception Workshop in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, Philippines. Running until 2018, the CRGG Planning Project is being implemented in partnership with the CCC.
“The CRGG Planning Project is a key initiative in building ‘Communities of Resilience’ throughout our archipelagic nation,” said Assistant Secretary Romell Antonio O. Cuenca, Deputy Executive Director of CCC. “Through the Project, communities will be equipped with the right scientific approach to not only address, but also adapt to the various challenges of Climate Change.”
The Project will include the development of a Provincial Climate Resilient Green Growth Strategy that will support the pursuit of critical policies and projects in Palawan.
“The CRGG project is a beneficial initiative supporting Palawan’s environmental protection and sustainable development goals,” said Jose Alvarez, Governor of Palawan Province.
The Inception Workshop introduced the CRGG Planning Project to key local stakeholders in an effort to strengthen project buy-in, raise awareness on the challenges and opportunities to address climate change, and outline responsible development in their respective sectors.
The workshop welcomed close to 150 participants, including 12 Mayors from various municipalities and the City of Puerto Princesa, as well as technical personnel from the local government units. Members of the academe, private sector, national government agencies, and civil society organizations were also represented in the workshop.
“This project will help build our capacity to address climate change,” noted Lucena Demaala, Mayor of Narra, Palawan, and President of the League of Municipal Mayors of Palawan.
Development agencies including USAID, the GIZ and the EU, also participated in the CRGG Planning Project workshop in order to explore potential areas of synergy with their own development initiatives on Palawan province.
The results of the workshop will be used by GGGI to design project activities and action plans that will be implemented by FREEDOM, Inc., a consulting firm engaged to deliver the CRGG Planning Project.
“Today’s project roll-out represents the commitment at all levels of Philippine government to develop and deliver green growth solutions that lead to tangible and practical results,” according to HyoYoul Kim, GGGI Country Representative to the Philippines.
GGGI has been supporting green growth in the Philippines since 2011, through the Ecotown Project that has helped to implement sustainable development in the Municipality of San Vicente, Palawan.
