Background

Circular Economy is a proposal to address production turning towards sustainability, reducing the use of resources, energy from conventional sources, as well as the volume of waste finally disposed of. To do so, it is promoted to recover, redesign, restore, reduce, reject, remanufacture, reuse, repair, recover and recycle existing materials and products as many times as possible to create added value. In this way we extend the useful life of the products. In practice it entails reducing products to a minimum, when a product reaches the end of its life, the components and materials can be used productively over and over again, thus creating new value opportunities.

The transition towards a circular economy represents a unique opportunity for cities like Lima to establish a conviction within the urban ecosystem under a more sustainable vision and in harmony with the planet. Within this framework, in order to generate changes that promote the conservation of natural resources, the minimization of negative externalities, and contribute to climate commitments, GGGI is supporting the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima in its transition to the circular economy while at the same time providing them with climate finance tools to help them mobilize resources for waste management.

As part of this assistance, the municipality is working in the development of the Circular Economy Strategy for the province of Lima 2023 – 2030, to provide the climate finance tools to help them mobilize resources for waste management, seeking new funding opportunities through the development of partnerships.

Output 1: Support and deploy Lima´s Circular Economy Strategy 2022-2030.

Output 2: Design and support the development of a management plan for EMMSA (municipal wholesale market).

Output 3: Development of systematization tools and indicators to facilitate the access to climate financing for the waste sector (other sectors TBC).

Output 4: Support the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima in seeking funding for technical studies, as part of its reporting activity to the CDP platform.
