Multipartner Implementation Agreement on CSA Models for Tree Nurseries in Karakalpakstan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, March 20, 2024 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), under the leadership of GGGI Uzbekistan Country Representative, Dr. Aaron Russell, and the Project Manager of the Regional Project Ecologically-Oriented Development of the Aral Sea Region – GIZ, Dr. Paul Schumacher, signed an Implementation Note to cooperate on the development of the Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) pilots in Karakalpakstan

Under this implementation note, concrete actions have been agreed. GGGI will provide the Sprinkler and Drip irrigation systems for two different tree nurseries of the Bozataw and Karauzyak Forestry Enterprises. While GIZ will deliver the electricity supply for this irrigation equipment, E-solar panels will be the main option. In addition, the Forest Committee of Karakalpakstan will ensure extra support to strengthen Tree Nurseries’ managerial and technical capacities to continuously improve tree production in Karakalpakstan

These activities are linked to the Pilot implementation of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) models under GGGI’s Green Rehabilitation Investment Project for Karakalpakstan Republic to address impacts of the Aral Sea crisis(Aral Sea GRIP).

Background:

The desiccation of the Aral Sea basin and its delta have resulted in the loss of agricultural potential, livelihoods and employment and have led to health challenges. These problems are expected to worsen due to the impacts of climate change. To effectively address these issues, GGGI is implementing Green Rehabilitation Investment Project for Karakalpakstan Republic to address impacts of the Aral Sea crisis(Aral Sea GRIP), which aims to support communities of the most disaster-afflicted districts Bozataw, Chimbay, Karauyzak and Kegeyli with climate-smart measures, such as the implementation of CSA models, including tree windbreaks plantation and drip irrigation systems promotion, to build sustainable livelihoods.

The project is operating from 2021 to 2024, financed by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) with USD 5.9 million and supported by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan (MEEPCC).
