Mr. Ban Ki-moon Re-elected as President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of GGGI for 2024-2025

Seoul, Republic of Korea, October 11, 2023 — The Member States of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) unanimously re-elected Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, as President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of GGGI for a fourth term, extending his term until the end of 2025. President and Chair Ban was first appointed as President and Chair on February 20, 2018, re-appointed for a second term on October 16, 2019, followed by a third appointment on October 28, 2021.

Under the guidance of President and Chair Ban, GGGI has achieved remarkable milestones and played a pivotal role in promoting green growth as a key driver of economic transformation and sustainable development in its Member States and partner countries. Since 2018, GGGI has grown from 27 to 47 Member States with another 23countries and 1 regional integration organization in the accession phase. His re-election for a fourth term is an indication of the trust and confidence that GGGI Member States place in his guidance and in the organization’s green growth mission.

In accepting his re-election, President and Chair Ban expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving GGGI Member States and partners. He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the organization’s objectives to address climate challenges and promote sustainable, resilient, and inclusive development.

“I am proud to have seen GGGI grow during my time as the President and Chair—in the number of Member States, the number and scope of projects that help countries fight and adapt to the climate crisis, and the impacts that GGGI has on improving the livelihoods of vulnerable communities—and I have been very pleased to continue contributing, even after my retirement from the United Nations, to the Paris Climate Agreement and the SDGs, two of my legacies as UN Secretary-General,” said President and Chair Ban.
