MPWT and GGGI sign an MOU to solidify partnership to develop sustainable transport and sewerage and wastewater management sectors in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, Cambodia -9 May 2024, Collaboration between the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) presided over by H.E. Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport.

Building upon MPWT’s commitment to sustainable transport and sanitation sectors, and leveraging GGGI’s expertise in policy formulation, technical advisory, investment mobilization, and capacity building, this MoU identified the framework for synergistic engagement between the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). The collaboration extends across important areas including urban sanitation/wastewater management, sustainable transport, and green mobility. Through this strategic alliance, both institutions aim to foster positive impacts on the environment, public health, and the promotion of sustainable economic development in Cambodia.

H.E. Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, said, “The Ministry of Public Works and Transport is dedicated to building a greener future for Cambodia. This collaboration with GGGI will provide us with valuable expertise and resources to advance sustainable infrastructure development and tackle critical environmental challenges in the transport and sewerage and wastewater management sectors.”

Ms. Helena McLeod, GGGI representative in signing the MOU and the deputy director general of GGGI, said, “GGGI’s experience in promoting green growth models aligns perfectly with Cambodia’s commitment to sustainable development. Through this partnership, we will unlock innovative solutions to ensure a thriving economy built in harmony with the environment.”

After the MOU signing ceremony concluded, H.E. Peng Ponea, the Minister of MPWT and Chairman of the ceremony, received the guideline for the Operation and Maintenance of Sewerage Networks from a GGGI representative. He then handed over the guideline to the director general of the General Directorate of Sewerage and Wastewater Management. The guideline, a joint publication between MPWT and GGGI, aims to ensure the sustainable use of sewerage networks.

MPWT and GGGI are currently working together on initiatives on AFD-funded air quality improvement, sustainable transport (E-bus Siem Reap), urban sanitation capacity building program, and are developing initiatives on decentralized wastewater systems, urban transport and e-mobility etc. The MOU aims to bring more resources, technical partners on board these initiatives, scale up impact, and identify projects that help create an enabling environment for private investments in these sectors.
