MEDIA ADVISORY: GGGI to Host Two High-Level Forums at Africa-Korea Summit

Seoul, 23 May 2024- The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) will host two High-level Forums on the sidelines of the upcoming Korea-Africa Summit. The two Forums, set to be held on June 4, will discuss two themes critical to Africa’s growth and resilience: access to green, climate finance and addressing plastic pollution through concerted global efforts.  These Forums offer a platform to showcase the symbiotic Korea-Africa partnership opportunities, grounded in GGGI’s rich experience. Discussions will focus on themes critical to both Africa and Korea, including Climate Smart Agriculture, Food Security, forest restoration, agroforestry, Nature-Based Solutions, Carbon Transaction Facilities, GreenPreneurship, and advanced waste management. They will also highlight innovative efforts within Africa to tackle plastic pollution and promote sustainable plastics management practices.

These events will spotlight the global challenges confronting Africa, emphasizing environmental sustainability and social inclusivity. The high-level forums will feature remarks by GGGI President and Chair, H.E. Ban Ki-Moon and keynote addresses from global leaders and will be attended by high-level participants, including policy and decision-makers, political leaders, researchers and academicians, climate change actors as well green growth actors and stakeholders.

High-level Forum on Accelerating Access to Green and Climate Finance for Africa
:  The Forum will discuss financial mechanisms and innovations that can support countries in their transition to green, sustainable, and inclusive development.

o   Speakers: H.E. Ban Ki Moon, President and chair of the GGGI,  Dr. Kim Sang-Hyup, Co-Chairperson, Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth, Korea and H.E. Josefa Sacko, African Union Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture and Dr. Malle Fofana, Africa Regional Director at GGGI.

         Session#2: 12:00-1:30 pm KST – High-level Forum on Enhancing Sustainability and Global Collaboration on Plastics:  strategies to address plastic pollution, innovative and effective waste management actions, and adoption of circular systems to manage plastic wastes.

The Korea-Africa Summit 2024 is aimed at fostering mutual, beneficial, and sustainable long-term cooperative relations between Korea and Africa. It is part of Korea’s efforts to build closer relationships with African countries across various sectors including economic, cultural, and particularly the developmental sector.
