Key stakeholders from the energy efficiency and transport sectors joined the validation workshop and reviewed Kiribati’s NDC implementation and financing national documents.

Betio, Kiribati – The Government of Kiribati has continued taking strong climate action during the current COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that climate action work progresses at pace on the ground.

With technical assistance from the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) through the Regional Pacific NDC Hub, the Kiribati Office of the President and Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy (MISE) hosted the final national validation workshop for its NDC Implementation Roadmap, NDC Investment Plan and Project Pipeline on 12 November 2020.

This validation workshop is the final one in a series of close consultations with Kiribati’s key stakeholders from the energy efficiency and land, air and maritime transport sectors.

The objective of this workshop was to present results of the NDC implementation and financing documents which address greenhouse gas mitigation pathways and actions in the priority sectors with the aim of receiving quality feedback from the nation’s experts working in energy efficiency and transport sectors.

The formulation of an NDC Implementation Roadmap to decarbonize energy efficiency and transport sectors puts Kiribati on track to achieving its long-term climate change mitigation goals. Through the NDC Investment Plan, the aim is to channel in secure, and reliable financing from private, public, donor and multilateral funders which will then help realize the robust pipeline of projects which is also a fitting reflection of national mitigation priorities.

Mr. Choi Yeeting, Senior Policy Adviser and National Climate Change Coordinator of the Kiribati Office of the President said, “recognizing the importance of mitigation efforts as a contributor to the resilient development efforts of communities in Kiribati, the Office of the President met with national experts to confirm the pathways and plans in our NDC Implementation Roadmap and NDC Investment Plan”.

“This validation workshop is the final in a series of meetings with key stakeholders and will support us in achieving the ambitious but practical goals of Kiribati’s NDC by addressing the long-term, greenhouse gas mitigation pathways in energy efficiency and land, air and maritime transport”, highlighted Mr. Yeeting.

Delivering his remarks at the validation workshop, Mr. Daniel Muñoz-Smith, GGGI Country Representative for Fiji, Kiribati, Tonga and Vanuatu stated that “the NDC Implementation Roadmap and the Investment Plan will help address the targets of Kiribati’s NDC by unpacking its climate change mitigation commitments and establishing a clear pathway to decarbonization with a focus on attracting public and private sector investments”.

Mr. Vincent Guinaudeau of GGGI presented the key features of the NDC Implementation Roadmap and Investment Plan during a previous stakeholder consultation in Kiribati.

This activity, which had kicked-off with an inception workshop in November 2019 as part of the Regional Pacific NDC Hub’s response to Kiribati’s country request is now near completion. The next steps following this validation workshop are to capture the stakeholders inputs in the documents and submit the final NDC Implementation Roadmap and NDC Investment Plan and Project Pipeline to the Government of the Kiribati, following which national procedures will be mobilized to receive the final approval from the national cabinet and endorse these documents.

Led by GGGI within the Regional Pacific NDC Hub, this work was delivered in partnership with consultancy counterpart GH Sustainability. The Regional Pacific NDC Hub is implemented through a partnership between GIZ, GGGI, the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) with valuable financial support from the Germany, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand Governments.
