Government of Vanuatu kick-offs second phase of project to secure accreditation to Green Climate Fund

Port Vila, June 20 – The Government of Vanuatu stakeholders, the Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce, and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) organized an inception workshop today to advance the work on Vanuatu’s accreditation and direct access to the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

The workshop was held at the Ministry of Climate Change and was attended by the Minister of Finance and Economic Management, Honorable Dahmasing John Salong, who stressed the importance of supporting the Ministry of Finance and Economic Management (MFEM) to become accredited as Vanuatu’s first Direct Access Entity (DAE) to the GCF.

“Becoming a DAE means that MFEM can receive funding directly from the Green Climate Fund, an important global financial mechanism established to support the implementation of the Paris Agreement,” said Minister Salong. “We want direct funding support from the Green Climate Fund for climate change projects that have tangible transformation impact on the lives of our people, our community, and our environment.”

The project to enhance Vanuatu’s ability to seek accreditation and direct access to the GCF is in its second phase and is being delivered with technical support from GGGI.

The GGGI Country Representative for Vanuatu, Mr. Daniel Muoz-Smith who is in Vanuatu during the week also spoke at the inception workshop opening. “GGGI is committed to mobilizing USD 75 million of climate finance in support of Vanuatu climate action target and resilience”, said Mr. Daniel Munoz-Smith, GGGI Country Representative to Vanuatu. “Securing accreditation to the GCF is an important step in achieving this goal” he added.

As Project Delivery Partner, GGGI will recruit two national staff that will be embedded within the ministries of Climate Change and Finance to support coordination and capacity building.

The project will develop a National Designated Authority (NDA) Project Development Handbook, a National Strategy on Accreditation, strengthening the capacity of the NDA and in-country key stakeholders, and complete the MFEM accreditation application to the GCF.

GGGI served as the Delivery Partner for the first phase of the project.
