GGGI workshop kicks-off School Garden Program at 8 Primary Schools on South Tarawa

Tarawa, Kiribati, June 2023 – On Wednesday 7th June, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) through its Climate Smart Agriculture project hosted a workshop engaging the Ministry of Education teachers selected from eight primary schools. The workshop focused on implementing the School Gardening Program in 8 Primary Schools in South Tarawa and over 30 teachers came together to review and provide input to a School Garden Manual. The workshop was also attended by three senior officials from the Ministry of Education and two extension officers from the Agriculture & Livestock Division.

The manual will be used during the implementation of the School Gardening Program in 8 primary schools. It is expected the training material will be delivered directly to approximately 1,000 students while a further 4,600 students will learn from gardening activities. The remaining primary and secondary schools in South Tarawa will complete the Program in term 3 (2nd phase). The Program complements the Ministry of Education’s ambitious School Feeding Program.

The Ministry of Education is working in partnership with Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in the delivery of this Program.  Green Growth is defined as the economic development of people without compromising or having a negative impact on the environment.  This activity is one of the first in Kiribati to be funded with support from the Qatar Fund for Development.
