GGGI, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, NZMFAT, and Regional Pacific NDC Hub host Consultation on Fiji’s Efforts for Decarbonization under the Climate Change Act 2021

Suva, Fiji, April 18, 2024 – To support Fiji’s efforts to decarbonize its transport sector under the Climate Change Act 2021, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), in partnership with the Climate Change Division of the Fiji Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (NZMFAT), and the Regional Pacific NDC Hub convened a national consultation. The event is part of progressing Fiji’s submission of a new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2025.

The consultation focused on three sections of the Climate Change Act: the development of ‘Fiji’s National Carbon Budget,’ as a tool to support domestic emissions reduction efforts and NDC enhancement; the development of necessary regulations and reporting templates to support the requirements associated with ‘Mandatory Reporting on the Bulk Sale of Fuels’; and the development of the Terms of Reference for the ‘Transport Decarbonization Strategy.’

While convening the consultation workshop, Acting Director of the Climate Change Division, Mr. Filimone Ralogaivau, stated, “It is important to be aware of the specific approach to emissions reductions that is detailed in the National Climate Policy and the new National Energy Policy with emphasis placed on emissions reductions that are economically viable and help progress resilient development objectives in Fiji.”

The workshop was attended by participants from the government, private sector, and development partners. The discussions from this consultation will inform further policy updates relevant to the respective sections. This was a joint initiative – the Implementation Work for the Fiji CCA 2021, through the Regional Pacific NDC Hub project and – the Fiji Carbon Budget
