GGGI facilitating the second visit of the Korea Forest Service (KFS) delegation to Guyana

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – On June 26 and 27, 2023, the Korea Forest Service delegation will be visiting Guyana, and the GGGI will facilitate  the two-day visit. The focus of the visit are, (i) exploring REDD+ cooperative projects initiatives  with the Government of Guyana and (ii) discuss the potential funding of  the Mangrove restoration proposal submitted to the KFS.

Since the first visit in March 2023, the Korea Forest Service has shown interest in expanding its REDD+ projects in Latin America and the Caribbean countries such as Guyana. Guyana is a country with  large amount of forest (over 87% forest cover) and low deforestation rate (average of 0.06% annually over last 10 years), which has participated in REDD+ practices since 2009.

During this visit, the KFS delegation is expected to meet with High-Level officials in Guyana including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Forestry Commission, Senior official within the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Agriculture, including the Head of the National Agricultural Research & Extension Institute (NAREI) to evaluate possible projects of joint interest in the short, medium and long-term including:

  • Invitation to participate in capacity-building course for the development of national REDD+ capacities
  • Basic research for REDD+ cooperative projects
  • Technical training for satellite footage utilization & analysis
  • Mangrove forest restoration planning

Earlier this year the GGGI Guyana Country Program submitted a project proposal to the KFS for improving the resilience of vulnerable coastal communities and mangrove ecosystems to climate change related impacts in Guyana. The project objective is to protect, expand and sustainably manage the mangrove ecosystems in Guyana and to maximize the services they provide to the local communities and support of the global fight against climate change.

During the KFS visits, this project proposal for scaling-up mangrove restoration in Guyana, will be further discussed along with technological solutions presented in the proposals and a planned field visit to the proposed site of its implementation.
