GGGI Facilitates Indonesia-Norway MOU for Bilateral Cooperation on Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation

Seoul, South Korea, October 27, 2023 – On the final day of the Global Green Growth Week 2023 held at the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) headquarters, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs of Indonesia and the Ministry of Climate and Environment of Norway made a significant progress towards international climate collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

This Memorandum of Understanding represents a crucial milestone in the Designing Article 6 Policy Approaches (DAPA) program led by GGGI. GGGI continues to support the Indonesian government in enhancing its public policies to facilitate participation in carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement to achieve its objectives outlined in its nationally determined contribution. “We all look forward to the next milestone after the one we just achieved, which could be an Article 6 scaled-up trade between Indonesia and Norway,” added Thiago Chagas, Global Program Manager, Carbon Pricing Unit, GGGI.

This ceremony formalizes the Article 6 cooperation between Indonesia and Norway. GGGI will continue to act as a facilitator in this partnership to ensure international cooperation in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“This Memorandum indicates serious cooperation under Article 6 and carbon trade for both countries. This achievement facilitated by GGGI is a way to accelerate our mitigation actions and hopefully realize carbon trading in the near future,” added Dida Gardera, Senior Advisor for Connectivity, Service Development, and Natural Resources, representing Indonesia.

“Norway and Indonesia have a long-standing cooperation and friendship, and I am happy to be here today and eager to continue this collaboration to a bright future,” concluded Guri Storaas, Deputy Director General at the Ministry of Climate and Environment of Norway.

The signing ceremony concluded with a warm handshake between Dida Gardera and Guri Storaas signifying a promising start to this new relationship between the two countries. Both representatives also expressed their gratitude to GGGI for organizing this significant event. GGGI, in hand with Indonesia and Norway, will continue its work towards the next milestone: the signing of a Mitigation Outcome Purchase Agreement.

Fenella Aouane, Director and Head of Carbon Pricing at GGGI, summed up this ceremony as “a significant step in quantifying and trading carbon against the impact of national policies to reduce emissions.  It has taken a while to get here, but worth the wait. These scaled up solutions are needed to generate the transformational change required to meet the Paris goals”.
