GGGI and partners kicked off air-quality capacity building in Cambodia

Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 19 February 2024— the Air Quality Improvement Program (AQIP), funded by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), launched a capacity-building event on emissions inventories for the transport sector. Held at the Himawari Hotel, this event marks the first in a series of trainings aimed at equipping participants with the skills to develop a comprehensive emissions inventory for Cambodia’s transportation system.

Launched in May 2023, the AQIP is an integral part of AFD’s Southeast Asia program, supporting partner countries like Cambodia in improving air quality through targeted policies and measures. With a particular focus on transportation, a major contributor to air pollution, the program leverages the expertise of GGGI, who is leading project implementation.

This training series delves into the intricacies of emissions inventories, including data requirements and methodologies specifically tailored for the transport sector. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and skills needed to build a robust inventory, informing future plans and policies to effectively reduce emissions.

“Like many nations, Cambodia faces challenges in curbing greenhouse gas emissions, especially in the transport sector,” emphasized Mr. Kong Sophal, Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, during his opening remarks. “This training series is a crucial step forward, empowering participants with the skills needed to create a comprehensive emissions inventory for our transportation system.”

Ms. Shomi Kim, GGGI Cambodia Country Representative, said, “The emissions inventory is more than a tool; it is a catalyst for change. It provides us with a comprehensive understanding of our current situation on contributors to the air pollution in the transportation sector and how urgently we should pursue transitioning to electric vehicles or to prevent polluting vehicles in Cambodia.”

This capacity-building program represents a significant step forward in Cambodia’s journey towards cleaner air. By equipping participants with the necessary skills to develop a comprehensive emissions inventory, the AQIP paves the way for informed decision-making and effective policies to address transportation-related air pollution.
