GGGI and DENR sign MoU for Green Growth Cooperation

July 18, 2023 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) are looking into ways to collaborate in the development and design of scalable and inclusive green growth projects to enhance the sustainable management, conservation and restoration of the country’s natural resource base.

GGGI and DENR have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to partner in addressing key priorities for environment and natural resources management, where GGGI’s technical expertise in sustainable economic planning and development, policy advisory as well as mobilization of finance and investment can support DENR’s ambitious efforts in accelerating action towards low carbon development, circular economy, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.

“The linkage is clear between biodiversity, climate change, water, health and human development, and this is the core of our work under this administration’s leadership. With this MoU, we hope to actually enhance that effort and also contribute to what is being done regionally and globally in terms of climate change adaptation and mitigation,” Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga said.

GGGI Philippines Country Representative Marcel Silvius reiterated support to the Philippine government’s development goals, particularly in supporting climate action and inclusive green growth and recovery.

“GGGI is fully committed to support the agenda of the Philippine government, whether through investment mobilization, design of finance instruments, strategic support to policy and planning or capacity development, and by building strong environmental, social and economic safeguards in key development programs,” Silvius said.

Possible areas of collaboration between GGGI and DENR include wetland and forest conservation and restoration, with a people-centered approach to the management of natural resources, integrating ecosystem-based, community-based and business-based approaches.

Besides sustainable landscapes management, the collaboration also focuses on sustainable management of waste and accelerated deployment of e-mobility and renewable energy.
