Ban Ki-moon re-elected as the President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of GGGI

Seoul, Republic of Korea, October 28, 2021—Mr. Ban Ki-moon, 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, was re-elected as President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) by Members of the Assembly and the Council for the term of 2022-2023. The appointment was unanimously approved by the 40 Members of GGGI during the annual Joint Session of the Assembly and Council hybrid meeting this year.

As President & Chair of GGGI, Mr. Ban Ki-moon will continue to champion green growth and sustainable development and advocate the need for innovative partnerships for the global community to transition into low-carbon, sustainable, and inclusive economies.

“Last year, I began my second term as President & Chair of GGGI, and I was pleased to witness a wave of ambitions from our Members to push forward to a net-zero 2050 future, despite the many challenges that arose in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic,” shared Mr. Ban. “With the new momentum and increased level of global awareness, I have high hopes that GGGI and its Members will expand on their collaboration together to turn these carbon neutrality pledges into action and deliver on their enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions.”

Under Mr. Ban’s leadership, GGGI persevered through the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis and was able to strengthen its Members’ commitment to fighting climate change and shifting toward a green recovery. GGGI collaborated closely with its Members to support the development of long-term strategies to jointly address the new economic impacts of the pandemic along with the climate crisis.

Moreover, during this term, Mr. Ban oversaw the launch of Campaign for Blue Skies and Net Zero 2050 in the Republic of Korea and took part in multiple Climate Talks and Net Zero 2050 events with Members and partners to help raise ambitions for countries to pledge and implement plans for carbon neutrality.

Mr. Ban was first appointed as President & Chair on February 20, 2018, and re-appointed for a second term on October 16, 2021, to extend his term through the end of 2023. Over the course of his two terms as President & Chair, GGGI expanded its Membership by welcoming 14 new Members. Pakistan will officially become the 41st Member of GGGI on November 11, 2021.

The 10th Session of the Assembly and 14th Session of the Council was held in the format of e-consultations (Part 1) on October 11-22, and a hybrid meeting (Part 2) on October 28. The Joint Session was convened during GGGI’s flagship conference, Global Green Growth Week 2021, held under the theme of Green Recovery, Green Jobs, and Net-Zero 2050 on October 25-27.
