Asia Low Carbon Buildings Transition (ALCBT) Introductory Webinar

Bangkok, Thailand, December 18, 2023 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Thailand and the Thai ESCO Association co-hosted a webinar to thoroughly introduce the Asia Low Carbon Buildings Transition (ALCBT) project and launch GGGI’s technical paper on Demand Aggregation & Bulk Procurement for Energy Efficiency Projects. The project officially started on August 15th and had its first introductory meeting for the establishment of the Project Steering Committee (PSC) on October 31st.

The expected outcomes of the event were threefold. Firstly, the webinar aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the ALCBT project, emphasizing the critical role Thai ESCOs play in realizing greenhouse gas GHG emissions reduction goals. Secondly, it sought to present GGGI’s technical paper on Demand Aggregation & Bulk Procurement for Energy Efficiency Projects, highlighting innovative approaches to drive efficiency in the low-carbon building sector. Lastly, the event aimed to gather feedback and recommendations from ESCOs to align their initiatives with the broader goals of the ALCBT project. This alignment is crucial for creating synergies that will expedite progress towards Thailand’s GHG emissions reduction targets.

The ALCBT project is a crucial initiative to substantially reduce sectoral GHG emissions and catalyze Thailand’s transition towards low-carbon buildings (LCB). The project will accelerate the achievement of these goals by mobilizing financing for low-carbon buildings and addressing systemic and technical barriers. Project interventions involve developing planning, technical, and institutional tools, as well as building capacities for the mainstreaming of LCB in various public and private institutions.

Participants at this webinar were primarily members of the Thai ESCO Association who play a crucial role in implementing energy-efficient and sustainable practices in the building sector. Therefore, they are key players in contributing to the success of the ALCBT project and facilitating nationwide transition towards LCBs.

“This event will hopefully help Thai ESCO members understand the role of GGGI in strengthening ESCOs’ role in the energy development pathway of the country,” said Mr. Rawiwat Panasantipap, President of the Thai ESCO Association. He continued, “…I am certain that this intent of GGGI in light of the ALCBT project will further land in a replicable model of energy efficiency in the building sector at the national level.”

“The ALCBT project is a crucial initiative to substantially reduce sectoral greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and catalyze Thailand’s transition towards low-carbon buildings (LCB),” Mr. Suchai Buranavalahok, Senior Green Investment Officer of GGGI noted. “The project will accelerate the achievement of these goals by mobilizing financing for low-carbon buildings and addressing systemic and technical barriers,” he added.

The webinar set the stage for the next steps in the ALCBT project. Future plans involve leveraging the valuable feedback received on the ALCBT project and the Demand Aggregation, Bulk Procurement, and Super-ESCO concept to refine and enhance project strategies. Recommendations will be proposed to the ALCBT project steering committee and relevant government agencies for consideration.
