GGGI Opened a Country Office in Kyrgyz Republic and Will Strengthen the Country’s Climate Resilience for the Next 4 Years

Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, June 7, 2024The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) held an official ceremony today for the opening of a country office in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, after the Host Country Agreement was ratified in March 2024. The ceremony took place at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce building and was attended and hosted by H.E. Daniyar Amangeldiev, the Minister of Economy and Commerce.

The event also marked the launch of GGGI’s largest climate adaptation project in Asia to date, a USD 10.7 million project titled “Strengthening Climate Resilience through Flood and Drought Management in Central Asia,” funded by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea. The project will be implemented in the Kyrgyz Republic and Uzbekistan, specifically the Talas-Alatau and Ferghana ranges. It aims to bolster vulnerable communities’ climate and disaster resilience through integrated and effective water resources management techniques.

The project plans to support green job creation and improve income generation in the area. It will pilot innovative early warning systems, coupled with flood management, smart water pumping, and water gates. This will support 4 million people living in the areas, maintain natural capital, and create new green jobs.

“The Kyrgyz Republic is already experiencing the impacts of climate change through more frequent and severe floods, droughts, and other disasters,” said H.E. Daniyar Amangeldiev, Minister of Economy and Commerce. “We welcome GGGI’s expertise and this important project to solutions for building resilience in our communities. Through close collaboration with GGGI and our partners in Uzbekistan, we can develop the policies and techniques needed to adapt to climate change.

GGGI President & Chair, Ban Ki-moon remarked, The opening of this Country Office marks a major step forward in the shared dedication between GGGI and the Kyrgyz Government to jointly develop and implement sustainable green growth strategies. As you know well, achieving sustainable development is a marathon—not a sprint—that requires continued dedication, innovation, and—above all—collaboration.

For the project’s implementation in the Kyrgyz Republic, GGGI will collaborate with the Korea Export Promotion Association for Government Contractors (KEP) and the Asia Water Council (AWC). The partnership will help provide climate-resilient water infrastructures that can help flood management in the prioritized areas.

Moving forward, GGGI will continue to support the Kyrgyz Republic’s green growth development. This support will involve crafting the formulation of a Country Planning Framework and initiating green projects in other areas. These endeavors contribute to a sustainable future for the Kyrgyz Republic.
