Workshop on Regulatory Environment and Investment Case for Coastal Landscape Mangrove Restoration in Myanmar

Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, October 9, 2019 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), in collaboration with the Forest Department of Myanmar, organized a workshop on “Regulatory Environment and Investment Case for Coastal Landscape Mangrove Restoration in Myanmar” on 9 October at the Park Royal Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw. The objective of this workshop was to get stakeholder inputs on the identification of environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive models for mangrove restoration. GGGI presented preliminary findings from its studies on the following:

a. Economic assessment of Mangrove forest ecosystem services under enhanced community forestry governance approach;
b. Business investment opportunities for selected mangrove dependent value chains;
c. Social Safeguards and Benefit sharing mechanisms for value chains investments in community-based mangrove restoration and concessions projects.

The event is a part GGGI’s one-year project on “Development of an Investment Case for Mangrove Restoration in Myanmar”. As per GoM request, GGGI has focused its work initially in the Ayeyarwady region, bearing in mind the replicability and scale-up potential in the Thaninthari Region, Mon State, Rakhine State.

This project has the following objectives:
• Objective 1: Policy interventions to create enabling environment for investment in mangrove restoration
• Objective 2: Financial assessment and business model design of selected value chains.

The workshop was officiated by the Director General of the Forest Department of Myanmar. A total of 30 representatives from the Myanmer Forest Department, Department of Fisheries, Department of Agriculture, Department of Agricultural Research, Environmental Conservation Department, Investment Commission, and Directorate of Investment and Company Administration participated in the workshop.
