Suva, Fiji October 19, 2024 The Fiji Government, in collaboration with the Pacific Community (SPC), the Climate Finance Access Network (CFAN), and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), successfully hosted a two-day workshop on October 15-16, aimed at improving access to climate finance for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

The workshop brought together over 40 participants from academia, government, and regional organizations to foster collaboration and deepen understanding of climate change challenges. Discussions focused on sharing research, best practices, and strategies for mitigating climate impacts, building partnerships, and developing actionable solutions. Participants also explored policy implications, funding opportunities, and community engagement efforts related to climate action.

Dr. Sivendra Michael, Permanent Secretary of the Fiji Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, opened the workshop with a powerful call to action: “This workshop is not just an opportunity; it is a critical moment that calls for the unification of diverse stakeholders in our determined fight against climate change. Together, we must deepen our understanding of climate finance and develop bold, transformative strategies that align with our regional priorities and drive meaningful impact.”

Coral Pasisi, Director of Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability (CCES) at the Pacific Community (SPC), emphasized the essential role of academia and research in addressing climate change. “By empowering our educational institutions to access and utilize climate finance, we can leverage innovative solutions to tackle the unique challenges we face in the Pacific,” she stated.

The workshop included interactive sessions covering key topics such as identifying funding opportunities, building strategic partnerships, and implementing effective climate action initiatives.

Participants left with valuable insights and practical tools to mobilize climate finance at both community and national levels.

SPC, GGGI, and CFAN remain committed to supporting the Fiji Government’s efforts to enhance access to climate finance and promote sustainable development across the region.
