State Government of Nuevo León (México) and GGGI sign MoU to foster green growth interventions

May 15, 2023 – Seoul, Republic of Korea – Seeking to improve the quality of life of the population of the subnational state of Nuevo León (northern Mexico), State Governor Samuel García visited the GGGI headquarters to participate in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) together with Frank Rijsberman, Director-General of GGGI. Said MoU intends to promote green transition solutions particularly those related to sustainable water management, catalyzing low-carbon technologies and promoting electric mobility.  “In Nuevo León, we are pushing to ensure economic progress, but always in a sustainable way…for us, it’s very important to sign this MoU because we’re going to help economically and technically to transform our traditional industry into a greener and more sustainable one” highlighted Governor Samuel García.

GGGI’s Director General Frank Rijsberman said during the meeting: “In GGGI we are sure that this MoU will be impactful for the State of Nuevo León and leave a significant green imprint for the years to come”.

Prior to this ceremony, GGGI had already worked together with the Government of Nuevo León in 3 important aspects:

  1. Providing technical assistance to the public tenders conducive to the accelerated deployment of 110 e-buses for the Transmetro bus feeder routes, together with Metrorrey Public Transport Authority;
  2. developing an earmarked proposal alongside KOSME and Nuevo León’s Ministry of Economy that, upon confirmation, will foster carbon neutrality for industrial SMEs through the adoption of Korean low-carbon technologies, and
  3. scoping alongside Nuevo León’s Ministry of Environment the State’s key challenges and green growth opportunities

Nuevo León is a subnational state with almost 6 million habitants and holds one of the most important cities in the country, Monterrey, which has important and constant economic growth due to its industrial sector.

As the number and scale of challenges increase, signing an MoU between GGGI and the State of Nuevo León is timely and meaningful in this particular period, showcasing a good model of subnational cooperation while committing to a swift green transition as well as accomplishing international commitments to address and mitigate climate change.
