The population of the Republic of Karakalpakstan in the Aral Sea region faces critical challenges, such as ecological and economic instability, uncertainties related to ongoing climate change, and degradation of land and water resources, all leading to a worsening of livelihood conditions and the well-being of the local population. This analysis compiles strategic policy recommendations for decision-makers for a faster and wider transition to climate-smart agriculture, sustainable land, and forest management approach in the Republic of Karakalpakstan based on an overview of the studies conducted by Aral Sea GRIP, UN agencies, development projects, and local entities. The five policy recommendations of the White paper describe technical solutions and adaptive measures, as well as the main aspects of the enabling environment.

This publication is a key product of GGGI’s Green Rehabilitation Investment Project for Karakalpakstan Republic to address impacts of the Aral Sea Crisis in Uzbekistan, funded by KOICA.
