Over the last four years, Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) country teams have implemented “Waste to Resources” projects in Rwanda, Senegal and Uganda. These projects targeted multiple waste streams including plastic, organic, e-waste, fecal sludge and mixed municipal waste. The project interventions involved policy development, capacity building, awareness-raising, investment mobilization, feasibility studies and the construction of waste processing facilities. The Rwanda and Senegal project had a strong component on infrastructure development and awareness-raising amongst the general population. The Uganda project focused on policy and planning aimed at government and the private sector.

By working closely with governments and communities, GGGI aimed to catalyze transformative changes in waste management practices in these three countries and beyond. Key lessons and recommendations from the three projects include promoting organic waste valorization, improving e-waste collection systems, and emphasizing source segregation for efficient recycling. Financial sustainability requires better disposal fee systems and subsidies, while clear policies like EPR can enhance waste management. Market support, land use planning, large-scale facilities, and innovative financing are crucial for long-term success. Lastly, increased government funding, private sector engagement, and capacity building are essential for sustainable waste management.
