The Situation Assessment Report: Air Quality Monitoring in Cambodia is an important milestone of the Air Quality Improvement Program (in Cambodia) which is funded by Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

Air pollution is not confined byborders—it impacts communities worldwide. Cambodia is no exception. Rapid industrial growth, vehicle emissions, and fossil fuel combustion have driven higher pollution levels globally, while in Cambodia the effects are increasingly tangible. According to the Clean Air Plan of Cambodia (2021), PM2.5 concentrations in Phnom Penh rose from 13.59 µg/m³ in 2017 to 19.26 µg/m³ in 2018, with the highest levels often recorded during the dry season. Residential activities (43%), waste (27%), and the transport sector—responsible for over 70% of nitrogen dioxide emissions—remain the main contributors. Strengthening Cambodia’s air quality monitoring system is therefore crucial to better track pollution sources, shape evidence-based policies, and protect public health while contributing to the global fight for a cleaner, healthier environment.
