The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), with financial support from the Gates Foundation and technical support from Senegal’s National Sanitation Office (ONAS), has published Sanitation as a Climate Mitigation Pathway: Case Study for Methane Reduction and Carbon Finance Potential in Senegal, a report examining how climate-friendly wastewater treatment infrastructure can contribute to climate change mitigation while unlocking opportunities for sustainable financing.
Using the rehabilitated Camberene Wastewater Treatment Plant in Dakar as a case study, the publication assesses the potential of methane capture and energy recovery systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate high-integrity carbon credits. The analysis estimates a mitigation potential of approximately 966,717 tCO₂e between 2024 and 2041.
The findings assesses how Senegal’s sanitation sector can contribute to the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), support the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and strengthen the long-term financial sustainability of sanitation services through participation in carbon markets.
The publication provides practical insights into how investments in wastewater treatment can deliver both climate and financial benefits, positioning sanitation as a strategic pathway for climate action and green investment in Senegal and across Africa.
