Guide and Policy Brief on Integrating Conflict Sensitivity into Green Growth Initiatives

October 31, 2025

Category

Since 2018, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) has been supporting the Government of Burkina Faso in implementing a strong, inclusive, and sustainable green growth agenda. In a complex security context, marked by shifting social and environmental dynamics, GGGI has developed an innovative approach: conflict-sensitive green growth. This approach seeks to integrate the understanding and management of tensions into all interventions, in order to avoid any negative impact, strengthen social cohesion, and consolidate the gains of sustainable development.

Conflict sensitivity is therefore embedded at every stage of the project cycle—from design to evaluation—as well as in internal procedures and partnerships. For GGGI, this means supporting green growth that is interdependent with peace, both at the project and programmatic levels, in a conflict context, rather than working on a conflict, by promoting initiatives that contribute simultaneously to environmental protection, economic development, and social peace.

GGGI Burkina Faso’s commitment in this field is reflected in a clear vision: “By 2027, GGGI is a recognized leader within its ecosystem for implementing conflict-sensitive green growth in Burkina Faso.” This vision is grounded in its role as a credible, learning, and adaptive actor, working alongside the State, communities, and partners.

The Guide and the Policy Brief published today are strategic reference tools for all actors in peacebuilding and environmental protection. Developed through a rigorous collaborative process and informed by field experience, they provide:

  • context-specific analysis tools and techniques
  • key questions to anticipate risks
  • best practices to “do no harm
  • approaches to strengthen social ties and enhance the effectiveness of actions

These documents are intended for all those involved in green growth initiatives in Burkina Faso and across Africa. Applying them means recognizing that every action, decision, and interaction can influence social and environmental dynamics—positively or negatively. It also means committing to making green growth a driver of peace and resilience in a context of multiple challenges.
