Suva, Fiji, October 4, 2024As UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized at the Pacific Islands Forum in Tonga last month, “If we save the Pacific, we save the world.” Supporting our Pacific Region in the fight against climate change, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), as an implementing partner of the Regional Pacific Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Hub, has successfully concluded Phase III of its support to Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Tonga Governments. Initiated in July 2022, over the last 2.5year, GGGI aimed to support the vision of a sustainable, low-carbon, and climate resilient Pacific by providing technical assistance to the relevant government departments in the following areas:

  1. Solomon Islands – Developed a NDC Investment Plan for Renewable Energy, Forestry, Land Transport and Waste Sector.
  2. Fiji – Implementation support for the Climate Change Act (CCA), for Section 31 which highlights on Mandatory reporting on bulk sale of fuels, and Section 44 – Transport Decarbonization Implementation Strategy.
  3. Vanuatu – Developed a NDC Investment Strategy (including project pipeline), for the On-Grid Electricity Sector and Forestry Sector.
  4. Vanuatu – Developed a NDC Investment Strategy (including project pipeline) for the Forestry Sector.

  6. Tonga – Support to Conduct a National Forest Inventory.

The above will not only fulfil each country’s global commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement, but also enable, alternative sustainable and resilient development pathways in the national productive sector, offering multiple socio-economic and environmental co-benefits.

GGGI Pacific Regional Director, Ms. Katerina Syngellakis, reiterates GGGI’s commitment in supporting its member countries to advance in the journey towards achieving sustainable development and climate resilience, while mentioning, Whilst it is difficult to celebrate as we find ourselves in a climate emergency, we can rise to the challenge together and make a difference here in the Pacific and establish a global example.” She further stated that GGGI will continue as an implementing partner of the Regional Pacific NDC Hub in Phase IV from 2024 to 2027, alongside the Pacific Community (SPC), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), and the NDC Partnership.
