Africa Regional Director
The Global Green Growth Institute’s (GGGI) objectives in the region are to support Member and Partner States in Africa to sustainably achieve national green growth and climate targets including achieving nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and Paris Agreement commitments by developing strategic frameworks, mobilizing climate finance and unlocking green investments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create green jobs, increase access to sustainable services, enhance resilience to climate change and transition economies to green, low-carbon model of development.
Throughout Africa, GGGI implements projects across 15 countries: eleven Member States (Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, Togo, Uganda, and Zambia) and four partner countries (Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania).
GGGI’s growing presence in the region stems from the recognition of its impactful work championing the transition to a green model of economic development. The organization utilizes a value chain-based delivery model built on increasing green investments in tandem with strategically focused areas for increased impact and efficacy. Green growth remains at the forefront of GGGI’s economic development model, ensuring that economic growth integrates sustainability, inclusivity, and climate resilience.
Our work supports GGGI Member and Partner States in adapting to climate change and mitigating its impacts. GGGI engages in strategic partnerships with public and private sector organizations to encourage investment in innovative solutions that address the climate crisis and advance sustainable growth. These innovations include establishing resilient agriculture and food systems, building resilient infrastructure, enhancing disaster preparedness systems and stimulating access to green and climate finance to improve delivery of national climate priorities. Our efforts also support Member and Partner Countries to address unprecedented biodiversity loss, deforestation, and land degradation along with improving waste management, strengthening circular economy and reducing air and water pollution.
Our work in Africa has resulted in increased access to green and climate finance, strengthened proactive and responsive climate plans, policies and actions, built capacity to develop green bankable projects and supported actions that raise Africa’s resilience to climate change.
The Africa Regional Office operates in partnership with GGGI country offices to facilitate the development and operationalization of key interventions aligned with GGGI’s Programmatic Solutions. This integrative approach encourages informed project designs, incorporating country specific challenges, contextual backgrounds, climate commitments, and local priorities.
Between 2018 and 2024, GGGI in Africa’s impacts include:
1. USD 499 million Green Investment Commitments Mobilized
2. 23MtCO2eq of GHG emissions reduced
