GGGI, Province of Bataan, and Athena Energy Holdings Join Forces toward Philippines’ Renewable Energy Transition

Bataan, Philippines (Seoul, Korea; Singapore, Singapore) 23 Feb 2020 – The Provincial Government of Bataan (PGB), the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), and Athena Energy Holdings (Athena) signed a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on mutual cooperation for development of 50MW Solar PV Plant in Mariveles.

“This will be an important milestone to realize our vision of a carbon neutral Bataan”, said Governor Albert S. Garcia from the Provincial Government of Bataan.

“Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, PGB and GGGI are creating meaningful opportunities supporting the Philippines’ clean energy transition”, said Dr. Frank Rijsberman, GGGI’s Director-General.

Based on the initial design and techno-commercial feasibility assessment led by GGGI, the three parties mutually agreed for the development of 50MW Solar PV plant whereby Athena and PGB will co-develop and co-invest in the project. The joint agreement demonstrates the PGB’s commitment toward neutralization of its carbon footprint by 2025 as one of the fastest growing provinces in the Philippines with pressing needs and growing demand in sustainable urban services including renewable energy.

“We would like to keep contributing to the country’s renewable energy agenda, as this is an opportune time to build back better while recovering the economy”, Dr. Rijsberman added.

“We believe this spot-on project will also create new green job opportunities in the province during the period of COVID-19 recovery,” added Governor.

GGGI and the Provincial Government of Bataan of the Philippines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on green growth cooperation on July 17, 2019. This cooperation will also support the Provincial Government of Bataan’s vision of achieving a “Carbon Neutral Bataan.”
