    Project overview

Developing nations face a critical grid challenge: aging, manual infrastructure that causes energy losses of up to 30%. With ASEAN requiring USD 21 billion in annual grid investment, standard modernization is prohibitively costly.

With support from CTAF under GGGI, Cambodia’s VP.Start is tackling this challenge with a disruptive solution: the AI-infused SIMA Smart Grid. Built around the DRC series “grid adapter,” this TRL 8 technology converts legacy infrastructure into dynamic digital systems at under 1% of standard modernization costs.

The project validates performance in Laos with Électricité du Laos (EDL), targeting a 30% reduction in losses, while collaborating with Korean research institutes to align the system with international standards. Driven by predictive operations and asset health analytics, the solution extends the grid’s lifespan, providing a vital strategic buffer for immediate modernization.

Ultimately, the project delivers the evidence and international technical recognition needed to move the innovation from local pilot to a globally bankable solution. Expected beneficiaries include EDL operators and engineers (up to 30% reduction in losses; fault response time cut from hours to minutes) and Laotian end-consumers, who gain a more stable energy supply.

    Future outlook

The project is expected to generate evidence for future investment and wider replication across southeast Asia. Thus, successful validation in Laos will provide the regulatory and technical roadmap to scale Cambodia’s “SIMA Journey” model into India and across ASEAN, at under 1% of standard modernization costs, helping close the USD 21 billion annual grid investment gap.
