GGGI Establishes Country Presence In Fiji

Group PhotoSUVA, Fiji – October 30, 2015 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) has officially established a Fijian Country Office in Suva to strengthen support for Fiji’s sustainable economic development through green growth related work.

The new GGGI office is located in the Strategic Planning Department of the Ministry of Finance. Deputy Secretary for Strategic Planning Mr. Krishna Prasad commended the opening of the Fijian Country Office as a significant step to boost GGGI’s technical capacity and presence in Fiji.

This new cooperative arrangement will facilitate GGGI’s technical assistance to support Fiji’s Green Growth Framework through the enhanced transfer of knowledge, networks and experience. GGGI will also assist the Ministry of Finance with mainstreaming the Green Growth Framework into the new National Development Plan.

The new partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute is a part of Government’s efforts to address sustainable development and climate change, according to Attorney-General and Minister for Finance Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

“Fiji has taken a strong lead in promoting green growth as the key to our development strategy and we are the first Pacific country to adopt a development mode centered on sustainability and green growth,” the AG said.

Fiji has been a member of the GGGI since February 2014. In August 2014, Fiji adopted a green growth strategy in response to the serious risk increased pressure on the environment and natural resources posed to the economy and sustainable development.

“GGGI looks forward to expanding its work in Fiji. This new office in the Finance Ministry will strengthen our partnership with government and facilitate our cooperative work on the ground,” remarked Country Portfolio Director, Global Green Growth institute, Dr. Imran Ahmad.

GGGI is an international organization dedicated to promoting sustainable economic growth in developing countries and emerging economies. The Institute is focused on the integration of environmental sustainability and economic growth in the interest of preserving global resources.
