SEOUL – October 24, 2016 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) welcomed Peru as the twenty-seventh Member country of the International Organization committed to delivering inclusive, environmentally sustainable economic growth. The official announcement was made on GGGI’s 4th Establishment Day, the anniversary of the Institute’s establishment following the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012.
Peru’s membership with GGGI will strengthen existing efforts to transition the country toward a green and sustainable model of development.
“This new membership ratifies the commitment of the Government of Peru to continue our work in promoting the protection of the environment after our role in COP20” said Peru’s Ambassador to Seoul, H.E. Jaime Pomareda, who participated in GGGI’s Establishment Day gathering. “GGGI support will be a crucial asset in the improvement of environmental standards in Peru and will contribute to our aspiration of becoming a member of the OECD.”
GGGI has been on the ground in Peru since 2013, working with government and other stakeholders to develop green growth strategies and implement actions and projects in the country’s water and forestry sectors.
“We are very pleased to have Peru formally join the GGGI family,” stated Dr. Frank Rijsberman, Director-General of GGGI. “We look forward to continuing our collaborative work to enhance the country’s natural resources productivity, as well as share Peru’s green growth experiences and successes with other countries committed to transitioning toward a sustainable development pathway.”
GGGI membership has grown from 18 Member countries in 2012 to 27 Member countries in 2016. Peru joins Costa Rica, Guyana, Mexico, and Paraguay as Latin-American GGGI Member countries.
Peru officially became a GGGI Member country on October 19, 2016, following the deposit of its ratification of the international treaty, Agreement of the Establishment of GGGI.
The Establishment Day gathering was attended by senior representatives of GGGI Member and partner countries.
