Seoul, Republic of Korea, December 2, 2025 – Pohang City of the Republic of Korea (“Pohang”) has become the first official member of GGGI’s recently launched New Frontier Group (NFG). Pohang’s early leadership in joining the NFG reflects its long-standing commitment to innovation, climate action, and sustainable urban development.  

The NFG, recently established by GGGI in October 2025, is a multi-stakeholder platform designed to bring together leading businesses, philanthropic organizations, national and sub-national governments, and other non-state actors committed to advancing global green growth. This platform serves as a forum for strategic dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaborative initiatives that support low-carbon, climate-resilient development. Through the NFG, members are offered opportunities to participate in high-level convenings, co-develop emerging green growth solutions, and engage with a global network of partners working at the forefront of climate action. 

Pohang’s membership reflects the city’s ongoing transition from a traditional industrial base toward a model of sustainable, innovative urban development. As an inaugural member, Pohang will work with GGGI and other partners to co-design scalable approaches to green growth and contribute to shaping the early agenda of the NFG.

With Pohang as the first member, the NFG begins establishing a global community of leaders from across diverse actors and sectors that seek to deepen their engagement with GGGI, enhance their international visibility, and collaborate on impactful initiatives that accelerate sustainable development. The platform is expected to expand in the coming year as additional partners join this collective effort to advance green growth worldwide.

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) was founded as a treaty-based international, inter-governmental organization in 2012 at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. 한국 포항시, GGGI 뉴 프론티어 그룹 첫 회원 도시로 가입

2025년 12월 2일, 서울, 대한민국 – 대한민국 포항시(“포항”)가 최근 출범한 GGGI의 뉴 프론티어 그룹(New Frontier Group, NFG)의 첫 공식 회원이 되었다. 포항시가 NFG에 조기 가입한 것은 혁신, 기후 변화 대응, 지속 가능한 도시 개발에 대한 오랜 헌신을 반영한 것이다. GGGI가 올해 10월 설립한 NFG는 글로벌 녹색 성장 증진에 주력하는 주요 기업, 자선 단체, 국가 및 지방 정부, 그리고 기타 비국가 행위자들이 참여하는 다중 이해관계자 플랫폼으로, 저탄소 및 기후 회복력을 갖춘 국제 개발을 위해 전략적 대화, 지식 교류, 공동 이니셔티브를 추진하는 장이다. 회원 기관 및 단체들은 NFG를 통해 고위급 회의에 참여하고, 새로운 녹색성장 솔루션을 공동 개발하며, 기후 행동의 최전선에서 활동하는 글로벌 협력 네트워크와 교류할 수 있는 기회를 갖게 된다. 포항이 NFG에 가입한 것은 기존의 전통적인 산업 기반에서 지속가능하고 혁신적인 도시 개발 모델로의 전환이라는 현재 진행 중인 변화를 반영하는 것이다. 포항은 초대 회원 도시로서 GGGI 및 다른 협력 기관들과 함께 녹색성장을 위해 확장성 있는 접근법을 공동 설계하고, NFG의 초기 의제 형성에 기여할 것이다.

이강덕 포항시장은 “포항은 철강산업을 넘어 수소·재생에너지·탄소저감 등 새로운 산업 생태계를 통해 기후 대응형 경제도시로 전환하고 있다. 이번 NFG 가입은 도시 차원의 기후 대응을 강화하고 국제사회가 요구하는 지방정부 역할을 적극 실천하겠다는 우리의 의지를 보여준다. 포항은 산업도시의 한계를 넘어 기후 대응과 녹색성장을 선도하는 모델 도시, 글로벌 녹색전환의 중심도시로 성장해 나가겠다”고 말했다.

NFG는 포항을 첫 회원으로 하여, GGGI와 협력을 강화하며 국제 사회에서 주목 받고 지속가능한 발전을 가속화하는 효과적인 이니셔티브를 공동 추진하고자 하는 다양한 기관 및 부문의 리더들을 중심으로 글로벌 공동체를 구축해 나가기 시작했다. 이 플랫폼은 향후 더 많은 파트너들이 합류함에 따라, 전 세계적으로 녹색 성장을 촉진하기 위한 공동 노력이 확대될 것으로 기대된다.

글로벌녹색성장기구(Global Green Growth Institute, GGGI)
글로벌녹색성장기구는 2012년 UN지속가능개발회의에서 각국의 정부 간 조약에 기반한 국제기구로 설립되었다. GGGI는 회원국들이 빈곤 감소, 사회적 포용, 환경적 지속가능성, 경제 성장을 동시에 달성하는 녹색성장 모델로 경제를 전환할 수 있도록 지원한다. 현재 54개 회원국과 30개의 파트너 국가 및 지역 통합 기구가 가입 절차를 진행 중인 GGGI는 57개국 이상의 국가에서 여러 프로그램과 프로젝트를 수행하고 있다. 이러한 이니셔티브는 혁신적인 녹색성장 솔루션 개발, 기술 지원, 역량 강화, 정책 계획 및 실행을 포함해, 수익성 있는 녹색 투자 프로젝트와 파이낸싱, 투자 및 지식 공유의 파이프라인 구축을 지원하는 일을 포함한다. GGGI 활동은 회원국들이 지속가능한 개발 목표(SDG)와 파리협정에 따른 온실가스 감축목표(NDC)를 이행하는 데 기여하고 있다.
