Peace as the foundation for sustainable, inclusive, green growth
GGGI recognizes that peace provides the foundation for sustainable, inclusive, and green growth. Since 2023, GGGI has invested in building conflict sensitivity and peacebuilding approaches into its programming, policy work, and internal systems, with the aim of ensuring that co-benefits with peace and social cohesion are maximized.
At the country level, programs in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Colombia and elsewhere have tested and validated innovative approaches to integrating peace objectives into green growth solutions.
At the institutional level, GGGI has adopted conflict sensitivity as part of its environmental and social safeguards, committing to avoid contributing to violent conflicts. This commitment is further elaborated in GGGI’s strategy for Gender and Social Inclusion, in recognition that exclusion and marginalization are often drivers of conflict. These initiatives, and the growing body of analysis and evidence within GGGI’s approaches to supporting peace, are further institutionalized through training provided to all new staff.
GGGI’s work on conflict sensitivity and peacebuilding has been supported in collaboration with and with multi-year support from the Peace Nexus Foundation. This initiative, entering its fourth year, is incrementally building awareness, evidence, commitment and systems for conflict sensitive green growth within GGGI, but also contributing to global learning around how climate, economies, and peace must connect for a sustainable future.
