“Palawena” (women of Palawan, Philippines) in action to build climate resilient communities

March 15, 2019, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, Philippines – GGGI celebrated International Women’s Month by empowering a group of climate champions in Palawan. 300 women leaders of Palawan were engaged to take on imminent climate challenges affecting women and children at the Provincial Government of Palawan’s celebration of this year’s women’s month from March 11 to 15, 2019 at Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

The celebration was also attended by Palawan Governor Jose Ch. Alvarez who committed Provincial Government’s full support with USD 2.7 million budgeted for women empowerment.

Ingvild Solvang, GGGI’s Sustainability and Safeguards Manager, and Gilda Garibay, GGGI’s Provincial Officer, delivered presentations highlighting the fact that empowered women have better confidence to take on jobs to contribute to local economic activities and support their families to be more climate resilient.

The Provincial Government of Palawan recognized GGGI’s technical assistance in achieving Palawan’s gender and development targets since 2012. GGGI also supported the establishment of the New Banua Institute for Resilience and Green Growth (NBIRGG), a learning center for sustainable and inclusive growth where green city concepts are to be taught through community education and capacity development programs for women, indigenous people and marginalized groups in Palawan.
