Kigali, Rwanda | June 2026
The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), through its Leveraging Investments and Finance for a Green Transition (LIFT) Initiative funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), has launched two Green Rapid Assessments with Bank of Kigali (BK) Rwanda and I&M Bank Rwanda to strengthen institutional readiness for sustainable finance and accelerate green lending in Rwanda.
The assessments were conducted with I&M Bank Rwanda from 22–24 June 2026 and BK Rwanda from 24–26 June 2026. Delivered through GGGI’s Green Rapid Assessment Toolkit, the initiative supports financial institutions in evaluating their internal capacity, operational readiness, and implementation mechanisms required to scale green finance and align with emerging climate finance opportunities.
As financial institutions across Africa respond to growing demand for climate-aligned investment, moving beyond policy commitments toward operational excellence in sustainable finance has become increasingly important. The Green Rapid Assessment Toolkit was developed to help institutions strengthen the internal systems needed to effectively manage, track, and verify the environmental, social, and economic performance of green portfolios.
The assessment framework examines institutional readiness across five interconnected dimensions:
- Governance and Strategic Alignment
- Risk Management and Climate Integration –
- Human Capital and Operations
- Green Finance Portfolio
- Transparency, Data and Impact
In addition to these pillars, the assessment explores broader institutional enablers including operational processes, Environmental and Social (E&S) safeguards, regulatory compliance readiness, impact reporting systems, and digital infrastructure necessary to support the successful execution of green financing.
By identifying strengths and areas for enhancement, the Green Rapid Assessment Toolkit helps create a foundation for tailored technical assistance and long-term institutional transformation.
Through the LIFT Initiative, GGGI continues to work with financial institutions across Africa to unlock investment, strengthen climate finance ecosystems, and support the transition toward inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
