Green Recovery Approaches and Innovative Finance for Developing and Emerging Economies

Green recovery is an unprecedented opportunity to address a triple crisis of debt distress, biodiversity loss, and climate change impacts in developing countries and emerging economies. Therefore, this session presented practical examples of innovative approaches and financing mechanisms to drive a successful green recovery. Green recovery practitioners discussed the importance of engaging the private sector in green recovery. Innovative solutions for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to contribute to green recovery and examples of implementing business partnerships to achieve sustainable development goals were showcased. Moreover, case examples on integrating natural capital priorities in COVID-19 economic recovery plans and budgets were presented. By the end of this session, participants were aware of new projects and programs driving the green recovery, inspired by examples and ideas to sort out the multiple technical, political, and financial barriers hindering green recovery.

This event provided an overview of GGGI’s work within green innovation, including Greenpreneurs, country programs, and discussed current gaps and challenges for green startups in developing countries, highlighting the support needed to help startups get off the ground and scale up. This event served as an opportunity to award the winners of Greenpreneurs competition program as well as generate interest and funding opportunities for GGGI to support the entrepreneur ecosystem in its Members.

Innovations and Green Entrepreneurships in Africa: Unlocking the potential for Green Job Creation and Green Recovery

In an era where youth are dubbed disruptors, their contribution to innovative and sustainable solutions to Green Growth and Climate Resilience is translating into creation of employment opportunities.

Moreover, with economies greatly impacted by the COVID 19 Pandemic, many Countries are embracing innovative and inclusive green economic recovery plans that prioritize youth involvement in achieving the desired green economy transition. It is, therefore, critical to explore how the youth can contribute to a climate responsive and inclusive green recovery that accelerates creation of green jobs. This session introduced innovative initiatives that will trigger discussions around the fundamental elements of youth employability, opportunities, and entrepreneurship as well as the role of governments and research institutions in catalyzing green job creation and green economic recovery.
