GGGWeek 2021 – Climate Smart Agriculture Sustainable Landscape

Nature-based Solutions for Sustainable Development and Human Wellbeing in Africa

– Date/Time: October 25, 2021, 10:00 – 11:30 EAT (GMT+3)

– Session lead:

  • Dr. Gemedo Dalle Tussie, Country Representative – Ethiopia, GGGI

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are interventions aimed at conserving natural resources, sustainably manage different ecosystems, and restore degraded ecosystem to enhance ecosystem services thereby building resilience and improving human well-being. Land degradation and continued deforestation are common challenges in many African countries directly contributing to loss of ecosystem services and reduced GDP. The productivity of agriculture has been decreasing due to soil erosion and loss of nutrients. The adaptive capacity of communities to climate change is being threatened and Greenhouse Gasses (GHGs) emissions has been increasing overtime. Therefore, there is a need to reverse such threatening factors using nature based solutions. It is important to mainstreaming nature based solutions in governance and policy instruments, enhance regional and international cooperation for NbS and scale up NbS for mitigation, resilience and adaptation. If properly designed and implemented, NbS contribute to sustainable economic growth, creation of green jobs that contribute to poverty reduction, reducing GHG emissions and improve environmental health and conservation of biodiversity.

Sustainable Landscape and Climate Smart Agriculture Solutions in Asia/Pacific

– Date/Time: October 26, 2021, 14:00-15:30 KST (GMT+9)

– Session lead:

  • Mr. Marcel Silvius, Country Representative – Indonesia, Asia, GGGI

The world is facing a two-fold existential crisis of both climate change and loss of biodiversity. The Paris Agreement commitments will require radical political and socio-economic changes at individual and institutional levels to shift to a low-carbon economy and cut greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, a radical increase in action to adapt to unavoidable climate change is necessary. The land-use sector, including forestry and agriculture, have a key role to play in this through the sustainable development of the land-based natural capital provided by forests, wetlands and other key ecosystems on which our economy depends. Forest and wetland degradation contributes over 25% of global GHG emissions and containing global warming to 1.5 degrees cannot be achieved without turning forests and wetlands into a net carbon sink. This will require the development of climate-smart business models and approaches to land-management and agriculture, but also the active halting and reversal of loss of biodiversity, through the conservation and restoration of healthy ecosystems.

In this session we shared some key examples of the work of GGGI and some of our partners in this field, ranging from work in restoring and enhancing productive natural and agricultural ecosystems through business- based low-carbon development approaches and technological innovations, as well as options for improving urban ecosystems and resilience. In view of the importance of monitoring for learning, and measuring and verification of results, we also looked at the latest developments in near-real time monitoring technology for forests, agriculture and biomass.

– Date/Time: October 26, 2021, 08:00-10:00 GMT+0

– Session lead:

  • Mr. Omar Diouf, Regional Lead Africa, Climate Smart Agriculture & Rural Energy Nexus, GGGI

This GGGWeek2021’s session focused on climate-smart agriculture (CSA), an approach for transforming and reorienting agricultural systems to support food security under the dynamic realities of climate change. CSA underlines the importance of building evidence to identify viable options, value propositions and necessary enabling environments for effective implementation. Unfortunately, there is a major gap in the evidence base concerning barriers to the adoption of agricultural practices that respond to climate change and measures of overcoming these barriers. Panelists and presenters highlighted examples of solutions and best practices while undertaking in-depth discussion debate on how to mainstream CSA to transform a country’s agriculture sector into a more productive, climate- resilient, and low-emissions sector.
