Yeosu, Republic of Korea – April 20, 2026 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) has launched its high-level engagement at GX Week 2026 (Green Transformation International Week) and UNFCCC Climate Week in Yeosu. Led by Executive Director Sang-hyup Kim, a 20-member delegation of GGGI experts is set to drive over 14 strategic sessions aimed at turning climate commitments into tangible and bankable actions.

The week commenced with a high-level opening ceremony themed ‘A Path to Prosperity for ALL’, bringing together approximately 2,000 global stakeholders to align national strategies with international climate goals. Keynote perspectives were shared by E. KIM Sungwhan, Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment of Korea; H.E. Matsuo Takehiko, Vice Minister of Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan; H.E. Ugo Astuto, EU Ambassador; and a congratulatory message from Mr. Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC.

Building on the opening insights, GGGI Executive Director Sang-hyup Kim moderated a High-Level Policy Dialogue. Under the theme ‘Barriers to energy transition: International cooperation as a solution,’ the panel—including E. Jorge Ernesto Avila Antelo (Bolivia), H.E. Le Cong Thanh (Vietnam), H.E. Anne Kari Hansen Ovind (Norway), and Ms. Noura Hamladji (UNFCCC)—tackled the urgent need to stabilize renewable energy supply chains through multilateral partnership.

Throughout the week, the GGGI delegation will lead dialogues to bridge the investment gap in the Global South. A strategic priority is the operationalization of Article 6, facilitating the transition to the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM) to unlock vital climate finance.

GGGI will also spotlight innovative solutions, including AI-driven climate action and the Belém Gender Action Plan. Through technical workshops, the delegation will provide practical pathways to structure ‘bankable’ NDC projects, leveraging “Just Transition” models like the Coal-to-Clean initiative to ensure sustainable and equitable green growth. “Energy transition is no longer a choice but a survival strategy that no nation can achieve alone,” said Executive Director Sang-hyup Kim. “In Yeosu, GGGI is focused on closing the gap between policy and implementation by fostering the multilateral collaboration needed for sustainable future.”

As a key milestone, GGGI is collaborating with the UNFCCC Secretariat and the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MOEF) of Korea to host the Global Voluntary Carbon Market (GVCM) Inception Workshop on April 22. This initiative will strengthen institutional readiness for high-integrity carbon markets worldwide.

대한민국 여수, 2026년 4월 20일 – 글로벌녹색성장기구(사무총장 김상협, 이하 “GGGI”)가 20일부터 여수에서 열리는 「여수 기후 주간(UNFCCC Climate Week & GX Week 2026)」에 참여해 국가 온실가스 감축목표(NDC) 달성을 위한 실무적 지원에 나선다.

• 김상협 GGGI 사무총장을 포함한 20여 명의 GGGI 전문가 사절단은 이번 행사 기간 총 14개 이상의 주요 세션을 공동 주최하거나 연사로 참여하며, 개도국의 기후 위기 대응을 위한 실질적인 투자 연결과 기술 지원 방안을 집중적으로 논의할 예정이다.

대한민국 기후부 주관으로 열린 이번 행사의 개회식에서는 김성환 기후부 장관의 기조연설과 사이먼 스틸 UNFCCC 사무총장의 축사가 진행되었고, 일본과 유럽연합(EU) 등 주요국 대사들이 참석해 에너지 전환을 향한 국제사회의 연대를 확인했으며, 이어진 고위급 정책대담에서는 김상협 GGGI 사무총장이 진행을 맡아 정책 이행을 위한 국제협력 방안을 논의했다.

• ‘에너지 전환의 장벽: 해결책으로서의 국제협력’을 주제로 한 이번 대담에는 볼리비아, 베트남, 노르웨이 및 UNFCCC의 고위 인사들이 참여해 재생에너지 공급망 안정을 위한 다자간 파트너십의 시급성을 강조했다.
• 김상협 GGGI 사무총장은 “에너지 전환은 한 국가의 노력만으로는 한계가 분명한만큼 국가 간 경계를 허무는 협력이 필수적”이라며 “GGGI는 이번 행사에서 정책이 현장에서 실제로 구현될 수 있도록 돕는 실무적인 가교 역할에 집중할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

GGGI는 행사 기간 파리협정 제6조의 본격적인 운영을 위한 탄소 시장 구축 논의를 주도한다. 특히 개도국이 신뢰도 높은 기후 재원을 확보할 수 있도록 돕는 파리협정 전환 메커니즘(PACM)과 인공지능(AI)을 활용한 기후 대응 전략 등 전문적인 실행 방안들을 선보인다.

• 오는 22일에는 UNFCCC 사무국 및 한국 재정경제부와 공동으로 ‘글로벌 자발적 탄소시장(GVCM) 출범 워크숍’을 개최한다. 이는 국제 기준에 부합하는 투명한 탄소 시장을 만들기 위한 제도적 바탕을 다지는 자리로, GGGI가 국제 정책과 현장 실행을 잇는 핵심 고리임을 다시 한번 확인하는 계기가 될 전망이다.
